In 2002 I opened Poets Corner Nursery to cater for the growing need for extended hours, all year round childcare provision in the Hove area. The building was already being used as a small nursery. It was however in need of complete refurbishment. After a short career in teaching both in London and Brighton I started a small term-time only childcare nursery in dedicated rooms in my own house (Joyland in 1986). Four years later I established Strawberry Hill Nursery in Brighton. This experience and my training as an Ofsted Inspector were of great help to me when I opened Poets Corner Nursery. Last year I was joined in the ‘nursery world’ by my husband who retired early from the headship of a local school. Group Organistation A maximum of nine Tiddlers (3 - 20 mths) will be cared for by four Nursery Nurses. Once your child is mature enough to join the Tumblers, usually at about 20 mths, they will be placed with the group of up to ten under 3 year olds. They will have three Nursery Nurses to care for them. Around their 3rd birthday they will join the Toppers (ratio 1:8) with a more organised day, gently preparing them for school. There is a certain amount of flexibility between these groups and children of different ages spend time together in the spacious outside area. Before children move from group to group discussions are held with parents / carers. Familiarisation sessions are organised to make sure the ‘move up’ is the correct decision.
